Car Accident

After a scary afternoon, we are all very grateful to a merciful God who chose to spare our lives today.

We were enjoying a nice, relaxing Sunday afternoon. It was 40 degrees and sunny, and had a craving for ice cream. We hadn't been to Ivenhoe's in months - sad, I know. For those of you that aren't from the area, this place is a local favorite and pretty well known for their amazing sundays and shakes...100 choices of each!

We decided on the way back home we would go down "Devil's Backbone" which is a really fun, hilly road, and we thought Titus would love it. What is ironic is that we were talking about how narrow the road was, and how it is pretty dangerous during the day because you can't see cars at all with the big hills. Anyway, as we top the last hill we come head to head with a big red truck. Stephen immediately turned the wheel to the right to try to avoid hitting the truck head-on, but of course by now we are heading down the hill, gravity is working against us, and we have no traction. We started heading toward a sign on the left side of the road so again Stephen turned the wheel to try to gain control and pull us back on the road. We somehow did a 180 degree spin and landed in the ditch.

Lots to be thankful for, and lots of miracles surrounding this accident:
  1. We didn't hit the truck
  2. We didn't flip, even though we probably should have
  3. We didn't hit any trees - or ANYTHING for that matter
  4. The kids are completely fine...and other than a little stiffness, we are fine
  5. We have very little damage to the car - we need a new hubcap and a new tire, but we were going to have to replace all 4 tires this spring/summer anyway. We also will need a few bolts to re-fasten a couple spots where the plastic covers came loose underneath. Other than that, nothing else is wrong.
  6. Since we have a truck, we didn't have to pay to have it towed out - we just had to go home and get the truck :) Thankfully a friend from church came and got us.

This shows where we slid and how close we were to the trees

You can see at the top where we slid off the road to avoid the truck coming down the hill, the sign we almost hit, and the really short distance we did a 180 in...still not sure how that happened!

Here is our flat tire and broken
hubcap. Stephen is taking the car in tomorrow morning to see if we will need a new rim...hopefully not!!

Oh my goodness Michelle!!!! Everyone in Upland knows to avoid Devil's backbone because teenagers use it for a thrill ride. So glad you're okay! Others haven't been so lucky!

That much damage is better than getting anyone hurt. I remember my first accident, though I am the only passenger, breaking your nose by crashing it to the windshield is not a very pleasurable thing to do.lol
