Several weeks ago, I tried to fill out the unemployment form online, but it said I couldn't (probably because I was an Indiana employee and live in Michigan). The website gave me a number to call, but there is only one afternoon a week that I could call, plus make up days on Thursdays and Fridays. Well, it wasn't Wednesday, so I couldn't call. Then with being sick for several days and then with all the holiday stuff, I forgot. When I did remember to call New Years Eve, they were closed.
Last week I was in Indiana, so today being the first day I could try to call again, I sit down at 12:30 PM to call...but the message said that all "long distance company circuits" are busy - which doesn't make sense because it is a toll free call!
So then I FINALLY get through and it says to press 1 if you would like helpful tips before filing - I thought, GREAT this will help speed things up if I have everything together. WRONG. It took me to some strange option where it kept telling me it couldn't understand my "choice" and just hung up on me!
I tried back...and it went through, but the voice says "sorry, we are experiencing high call volumes. Please visit us on the web (which I can't do) or try your call later."
THIS SHOULD NOT BE THIS DIFFICULT!!!
Thankfully I kept at it and finally got through...but I was on the phone (on hold) for almost 20 minutes to talk to someone. Then he gave me a little scare because he said that I had to file an INDIANA claim...but I breathed a little easier when he told me that he could help me with that (otherwise he said I would have had to physically go to Indiana).
So after another 20 minutes of waiting and answering his questions, my unemployment is filed with Indiana...and they should contact me by the end of next week. Thankfully he said that I called on time, so I should still get unemployment pay for this week even if they don't contact me. I really hope so.
Total time spent on this today alone: 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Sheesh.
