I figure almost 5 years of having kids, just now making a trip to the ER is really not bad, and a lot to be thankful for, even in the midst of a scary situation.
Yesterday Titus, Damaris, Eve, and I went to the playground at the school next to our house. But I had to come back to take care of the bread I was making. After we were ready to head back out, Damaris wanted gum so she stayed inside with Stephen and Eve while Titus and I went back to the playground. Titus went down the big, white, metal slide (which is a huge deal because he has been very scared of going down before). Then he headed back up the steps, got to the top, and decided to come back down (which is definitely a very frequent occurrence). He was about 3-4 steps from the bottom, when he somehow tripped and fell - head first - down the rest of the metal steps and landed, on his head, in the stones. He got up right away and of course I immediately ran the 20 feet from the bench where I was sitting to the slide. When I got there, he was holding his face by his temple, and there was blood everywhere. I saw the cut, knew it was really deep, and ran to the house, which is probably 100 yards away - so if you know me, it was only adrenaline getting me to the house because I can't run, let alone carrying 35 extra pounds. By then the blood was streaming down his face, and his whole face and hands were covered in blood. Stephen immediately got a towel, put ice on it, and quickly got all of us out the door (almost forgetting about Eve!). Thankfully Carson City Hospital is only about 7 miles away, and thankfully there was absolutely no one else in the ER, so they were able to get things taken care of, and quickly. Titus ended up with only 3 stitches - I thought he would have twice that, and we were out of the ER within an hour and a half. They did x-rays to make sure he was OK since he landed on his head and neck, and everything came back clear. He really did very well through the whole thing! Obviously he didn't like getting the stitches, but overall did good. He looks terrible, though! He has a couple bruises on his knees, and a pretty good sized bruise on his shoulder, but otherwise most of the cuts and bruises are on his face. I am over and over again thankful that it was just me and Titus at the park. I am not sure what I would have done if Damaris was with me - although she was pretty shook up when she saw Titus with so much blood all over, and with us rushing out of the house. Thankfully a couple from our church came to the hospital and got Damaris so that she didn't have to be in there when the doctor was doing Titus's stitches.
Here are some pictures:
Obviously this looked worse in person...but it gives you an idea of how bad it was.
Titus Taco!
He was in good spirits for the most part!
Much better now!
(Although I am not looking forward to having to take Titus back to get the stitches out...)
And just because I want to end on a more positive note...here are some pictures of earlier in the afternoon before all of this happened:
